Data Management

The KeNODC identifies and assembles oceanographic datasets. Subsets of such data are extracted covering the Kenya coastal zone and contiguous areas covering the EEZ and beyond. The following boundary has been adopted to ensure a comprehensive coverage and also sharing with neighboring countries: 390E, 450E and 10S,60S.

The data sets consist of oceanographic station data, baseline maps, and ecological field data. The oceanographic station data are stored in ASCII format by instrument type and selection may be made using a wide range of software tools. the data are stored in GIS form and spreadsheet tables.

Summaries of data are routinely produced for such important relationships such as T-S diagrams and others. The following are some of the products and services:

  • Data management support
  • Computer software tools available for quality control, analysis and sub setting of data
  • Datasets resulting from ocean observing programs and respective meta data
  • Tide predictions in high-low listings and hourly values based on sea level observation from tide gauges in Mombasa and Lamu
  • Print out of data holdings in hard copy form for distribution
  • GIS services for scientists and coastal management practitioners.
  • Internet and e-mail facilities provided to scientists at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute
