KENYA PARTICIPATES IN THE MARINE AND COASTAL ATLAS DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
UNESCO/IOC Project office for IODE hosted the Marine and Coastal Atlas Development Workshop at the Project Office in Oostende, Belgium from 22 Nov – 26 Nov 2010. Regional Coordinators and Data Managers, representing more than 20 institutions from 22 countries Kenya included participating in ODINAFRICA IV attended the workshop.

The workshop covered: Ocean Data Collection Development (including the use of GeoNetwork for preparing metadata records), Ocean Data Products and Synthesis, and MIDA installation. The Marine Irish Digital Atlas (MIDA) engine will be used for the development of the ODINAFRICA National Coastal and Marine Atlases as the platform upon which the data layers will be mounted.
The participants uploaded prepared products and related metadata records (to the MIDA engine) for a wide range of topics essential for the development of the atlases. These included:
- Coastline and main country boundary
- ETOPO1 national relief grid
- Earthquakes and tsunamis
- Sediment thickness
- SST from WOA
- SST from MODIS
- Richardson Surface Current Drift
- COADS air temperature (NetCDF)
- Administrative Areas (GADM)
- Marine Boundaries (VLIZ)
